# Folders (/docs/library/folders)

Files live in folders, nested as deep as you like, per Space. A file is in one folder, or in none; use [tags](/docs/library/details#tags) for what cuts across folders.

The **Library** shows its folders as cards: a preview of the newest images or video stills inside (a folder and its folders), and how many files and how much they weigh. Order them by **Recent** or **A to Z**; one row shows, **Show all** shows the rest, and the arrow beside **Folders** folds the section away (remembered in your browser). Drop files on a card to upload them into that folder.

## Making and changing folders [#making-and-changing-folders]

- **New folder** makes one inside the folder you have open.
- A folder's page shows where it is, its cover, how many files it holds and how many images still need alt text (a link to them). **Share** and **Upload here** sit beside it; its **⋯** menu has **Rename**, **Move**, **Download all** (its files as one zip) and **Delete folder…**. A card's **⋯** menu has Rename, Share and Delete folder too.
- A name has 1 to 120 characters and is unique among its siblings.
- Moving a folder into another is done by an [agent](/docs/agents) or the [agent API](/docs/api/agent) (`changeFolder`). A folder can't move inside itself or one of its own folders.
- Only an **empty** folder can be deleted: move or delete its files and folders first.

### Nesting "X: Y" folders [#nesting-x-y-folders]

When folders are named like "Case: Abel", the Library offers to nest them once: each "X: Y" becomes **Y** inside **X**, X being a folder beside it with that name or a new one. **Review** lists what each folder becomes; nothing changes until you confirm. A folder whose new name X already holds stays as it is.

Nothing a site links points at a folder. Moving files, and renaming or moving folders, changes no URL, so content using the files keeps working.

## Moving files [#moving-files]

Click a file to select it, Shift-click to select a range, and ⌘ or Ctrl-click (or the check on a tile) to add or take one away; Escape lets go. One file shows its details beside the files; several show what they share: their folder, size, where they're used, and how many need alt text, with **Suggest alt text for N**. The bar at the bottom has **Move**, **Download** (one zip), **Delete…** (files content uses stay) and **Suggest alt text**. In Move, **Apply upload rules** runs the Space's [upload rules](/docs/library/rules) on the selection instead.

You can also drag files onto a folder in the sidebar: the selected ones go along when you drag one of them. A single file can also be moved from its details, with **Folder**.

## Finding files [#finding-files]

- **All files** in the Library lists every file of the Space; in a folder, that folder's files. More load as you scroll, with how many show of how many match at the end.
- **All**, **Images**, **Videos** and **Documents** show one kind, each with its count.
- **No alt text** shows the images without alt text in the Space's default language, **Not used** the files no content uses. Either narrows any kind.
- **Search** looks for part of the file name; **Newest**, **Oldest**, **Name** and **Size** order the files.
- **Grid** shows tiles, **List** a table with each file's kind, size, dimensions, where it's used, its alt text and when it was added; click Name, Size or Added to order by it.
- **Tags** filter by one tag, and **Products** by a Shopify product when the Space has a [store connected](/docs/shopify).

A tile marks what needs attention: the watch-out mark for an image without alt text, **Not used** for a file nothing uses. The header shows how many files the Space holds and how much they weigh.
